Wednesday Weight Loss and Wedding Plans!

I am so happy to share that our oldest daughter, Jessica, got engaged on Labor Day! She and Jon have known each other for nearly two years, and he shares an apartment with our two sons, and works where my husband and one son works, and attends our church - he joke that he was under 24 hour surveillance for a year before their courtship began!   They are planning a wedding for January 3!

I am super short on time (like the craziest, never at home week of my life), but I wanted to get this posted and do my Weight loss Wednesday this too, but it will all be short and sweet!

They got professional engagement photos done by my friend, Renee of Little Earthling Photography!  She did an amazing job!

Life has now kicked into high gear with wedding plans and trying on wedding dresses!

Christy has also had some health issues come up so we have had lots of Dr and specialist appointments - in short we are addressing her issues with sleep apnea and swallowing/aspiration problems.  I'll post an update next week as then we will have the results from the sleep study that is happening tonight!

Here's my quicky Weight Loss Wednesday up too:

Did I overeat this week on any given day?
Nope - been survival eating since I've been so busy.  Eating too little has been more of a problem!

Did I move more and exercise regularly?
Moved more but have had no time for doing my workout, sadly!

Do I feel lighter than I did at this time last week?

Nope, about the same.

Did I eat in secret or out of anger/frustration/happiness?

No - but I did have a few things that were "off plan" due to having to eat in unusual circumstances but they were mostly whole wheat type things, not sugar, so I do not feel guilty about it (well, there was that white pizza crust).

Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food instead of to God?
No - too busy to do anything voluntarily!

Before I hopped on the scale, did I think I'd had a successful, God pleasing week?
Mostly - I just really felt that my eating was mostly not in my control.  I've been eating away from home more than at home and it's really tough.  I'm keeping next week's calendar as open as possible so I can get a handle on my eating (like more variety - peanuts are getting old!).

What were the measurable results?
I gained .7 pounds, but lost 1.5 inches, so I'm OK with this week.

Gotta Run!  Nap, Packing and then off to drive 2 hours to Christy's Sleep Study Appointment!

Thinner Thursday - Weight Loss Wednesday One Day Late!

It's one day late, but I'm still calling it Weight Loss Wednesday because it's my blog and I can if I want to, so there!

Did I overeat this week on any given day?
No.  Actually I struggled on some days with under-eating due to some very crazy/busy days and lots of time away from home.  I came close on Thursday night as I had a big salad and a few too many dark chocolate covered blueberries (I know, some may see this as a cheat, but it did no trigger any cravings and I was watching the SeaHawks and it was the best snack I could find at the grocery store - I did have Daryl hide the bag so I couldn't have anymore until the next SeaHawks game....so you will be hearing more about this "cheat". I only feel a smidgen of guilt on this).

Did I move more and exercise regularly?
I did better than last week, but there is definitely room for improvement.  I had my monthly and so a few days it was just not prudent for me to exercise, and the one day I did was pushing it for me.  But yesterday I finally got the whole Basic Workout done and felt great all the way through - yahoo!

Do I feel lighter than I did at this time last week?
I do, but wasn't sure that the scale would agree with me since last week I was still recovering from that stomach bug and was feeling awfully light!

Did I eat in secret or out of anger/frustration/happiness?
No.  Didn't really have time, but I did experience a lot of frustration this week due to time pressures, trying to get preschool/homeschool set up for the little girls and a crazy and busy week with doctor appointments and therapy and so forth.

Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food instead of to God?
No.  I am doing better at having my quiet time (still room for improvement) and I think that really helps!

Before I hopped on the scale, did I think I'd had a successful, God pleasing week?
Yes.  The only questionable thing was those dark chocolate blueberries, but since I had a good outcome this week, and it did not trigger any sugar addictions and I did not eat them for the wrong reasons, I'm OK with having them only when I watch the SeaHawks games (but next time I'm only bringing a safe amount in a baggy and leaving the rest at home (we watch the games at our sons' apartments as a cheap date night!)

What were the measurable results?
The scale was friendly to me this week (you know, post-pre-monthly weight ins are always nice) and the scale showed that I lost about weight since last week.  I wasn't writing down the weight each week and I just can't get it right, but overall I have now lost exactly 50 pounds since my first T-Tapp DVD arrived in August of 2012, and since I started my new spiritual journey of eating right to honor God in my life I have lost a total of 9 pounds!  I am less than a pound from my lowest weight that I reached about a year ago.
So about measuring...I have kept very accurate records of measuring almost every time I was doing T-Tapp regularly.  Since I started measuring I have lost a total of over 95 inches now!  When I measure I measure my upper arms, pecs, chest, ribs, waist, abdomen, hips, upper thighs, lower thighs and calves.  I decided early on that the best way to measure was to pull that measuring as tight as I possibly could so that I couldn't cheat the system (by pulling tighter the next week) and then it would be more accurate.

I measured for the first time (since last spring) just last week, and was so pleased with the progress this week, thanks to Aunti Flow effecting last week's measurements and being absent this week!  This is why I measure!  I "only" lost 2 pounds in the last week, but I lost 8 1/4 inches!!!!!  That was very rewarding, especially since I had gained 4 1/4 inches from my measurements last spring.  So even though I'm still a little over a pound heavier than I was a year ago, I am actually 5 inches smaller then I was then!  That means more muscle/less fat!  The scale is so not a picture of your actual health, but it easier to step on a scale than to take the time to measure yourself, but it's so worth it!!!!

And I do still plan to blog about my menus and meal plans and favorite recipes, but, again, this was just not the week!

Until next week - keep making good choices and turning to God instead of food to meet  your needs and if the scale is not reflecting your hard work, then it's time to start using that tape measure instead!

Weight Loss Wednesday

It's late, but I'm GOING TO POST THIS TODAY!

Did I overeat this week on any given day?
No, actually last Friday I got  bad stomach virus and could hardly eat anything until Monday.

Did I move more and exercise regularly?
Not really - was too sick to even try most days!  I did a workout on Thursday, and was able to do a few moves on Tuesday, but forgot today as I had to take Christy in for her swallow study (actually didn't happen due to a clerical error, so that's happening tomorrow morning instead!).

Do I feel lighter than I did at this time last week?
Most definitely - hollow described me most days this week, and most of today too, but a great dinner tonight gave me a very satisfied feeling (Alfredo Sauce + Chicken pieces + Dream Fields Angle Hair Pasta and lots of green beans with lots of butter!).

Did I eat in secret or out of anger/frustration/happiness?
Nope. but I had lots of reason for happiness this week, but I can't post about it yet.....I actually purchased veggies and fruit instead of chips and dip, and I just avoided the white buns and had a great meal!

Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food instead of to God?
No.  I did better, but I also had more challenges and did much better at praying about the challenges I was facing

Before I hopped on the scale, did I think I'd had a successful, God pleasing week?
Mostly - I did have one thing this week that was not "on plan" - when I was so super sick and trying to find ways to eat that would not cause my stomach to hurt and yet be satisfying, I resorted to have a cheesy roll on a white tortilla shell.  But I am happy to report that I did not resort to saltines and ginger ale which is my normal "go to" for stomach illnesses.  I mostly had whole wheat toast with butter and/or cream cheese (I was too weak to actually fix any food for three days).

On Monday morning I had lost 6 pounds from being sick, but as I expected on Tuesday I had gained 1 1/2 pound back.  This morning I was very surprised to see that I had actually gone down another 2 pounds, putting me just 1 pound above my lowest weight last summer.  Two more pounds and I will officially be at my lowest weight in 14 years!  (14 years ago I used the Atkins diet to lose a lot of weight very quickly, but my healthy suffered greatly from that experience.  I would have to lost another 46 pounds to reach and low weight I achieved at that time, but I was not exercising at all during that weight loss, so I might actually be thinner at a higher weight than that with the dense muscle that T-Tapp builds!

My goal has nothing to do with a weight, actually, but to do with size.  I want to be able to fit in my wedding dress for our 30th wedding anniversary at the end of March....it will take a miracle, but it might happen!  When I got married, I was 63 pounds lighter than I am now, but I know I will fit in the dress and yet weight more than I did then.

Oh - and I finally found my measuring tape today and will start measuring tomorrow, so next week I will include my weight loss and my measurement loss!

And I do still plan to blog about my menus and meal plans and favorite recipes, this was just not the week!

Until next week - keep making good choices and turning to God instead of food to meet  your needs!

Weight Loss Wednesday!

So it's been 17 days on this journey to grow closer to God and turn to Him to fill my spiritual and emotional needs, while eating healthy to nourish my body. To learn more about how God led me to this, please read my first Weight Loss Wednesday entry!

So here are the questions I will answer each week (far more important that actual weight lost!):

Did I overeat this week on any given day?
No, I did so well this week and have been completely over that nasty cold for a while now so I'm eating a little better.  Looking forward to a less busy week this week so I can take time to make a few things like cookies and skinny chocolate bon bons!

Did I move more and exercise regularly?
Yes, but I did exercise as much as I wanted to, but got lots or exercise doing house work, yard clean up and cutting for my home business!

Do I feel lighter than I did at this time last week?
A little bit.

Did I eat in secret or out of anger/frustration/happiness?
Nope.  I was concerned about the church's potluck picnic, but I was able to make good choices there too!  Lots of salads and meatballs!  Not positive about whether there was hidden sugars in those items, but I did the best I could at choosing foods that didn't look like they were sweetened!

Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food instead of to God?
No, but just like last week, I definitely could have done better at turning to God when facing temptations.  I added some more sticky notes to my bathroom and bedroom to help me memorize scripture to help me remember to do this in God's strength and not my own!

Before I hopped on the scale, did I think I'd had a successful, God pleasing week?
Yes.  As of Saturday I had  lost 4.8 pounds!  But as of my weigh in yesterday, I had gained 1 pounds back - not from eating choices...not sure why.  I have done more workouts this week and felt that I had a good week, so I didn't let that one pound back on bother me (much).  So basically I'm at the same weight as I was last week.  I have done measuring in the past and I know that measuring is a much better way to measure progress (I lost over 30 inches doing T-Tapp but had only lost 5 pounds at one point!), so I am planning to start measuring again now that I am past our post-adoption-home-visit (which was just a few hours ago and I think it went great!).

I have decided that I really need to do a blog post about what/how I eat and some of my favorite recipes, so keep an eye out for that - hoping to do that over the holiday weekend!

Weight Loss Wednesday!

So it's been 10 days on this journey to grow closer to God and turn to Him to fill my spiritual and emotional needs, while eating healthy to nourish my body. To learn more about how God led me to this, please read my first Weight Loss Wednesday entry!

So here are the questions I will answer each week (far more important that actual weight lost!):

Did I overeat this week on any given day?
No, in fact on a few days I think I under-ate, which can be  problem as then I don't sleep well or I am weaker to temptation later in the day, so I'm going to work on that!  I've been eating pretty much the Trim Healthy Mama way, but pretty much all "S" ("Satisfying" or "low carb") meals.  I did choose fruit a few times as a treat, but always had protein with it.

Did I move more and exercise regularly?
Yes, even in spite of being very sick with a bad cold.  I was able to get 3 workouts in since my last post.  I tried the second part of T-Tapp's Total Workout and made it about 20 minutes in, but then I got sick and haven't tried again - hoping to try that again today!

Do I feel lighter than I did at this time last week?
Definitely, especially around my middle.

Did I eat in secret or out of anger/frustration/happiness?
Not once - even at my first grand-baby's baby shower (due in October)!  I prayed ahead of time that I would be strong as I knew I would be distracted while there, and God gave me the grace to make the choice of eating the deviled eggs and fruit and not even desire the cake and punch!

I am so thankful for the grace God gave me this week, as I was very sick over the weekend, and I have always turned to "comfort foods" when I am sick, but I was able to continue eating healthy!  He also gave me grace in that I have not been overly tempted even when my kids were baking up a storm this week - cookies, cakes, bread and fresh freezer jam....even when I was feeding things to the little girls, I didn't even lick my fingers!  I can only say it is God's grace because I still so new at this that I often forgot to ask God for strength in the moment, but He gave it anyway!

Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food instead of to God?
No, but I definitely could have done better at turning to God when facing temptations.  I have some sticky notes up in my kitchen now to help me remember to do this!

Before I hopped on the scale, did I think I'd had a successful, God pleasing week?
Yes, I felt that I had an amazing week even though I faced lots of temptations and had such a tough time being sick for half of this week.

So how much did I lose this week?  Well, since I started this journey 10 days ago, I have lost 3.7 pounds!  I am happy with that, for sure!

New Beginnings - Weight Loss Wednesdays!

This month marks the 2 year anniversary of my starting T-Tapp!  I have NEVER EVER stuck with any exercise program for more than a few months, let alone 2 years!  Sadly, I have not been totally consistent at doing it, but unlike any other exercise program I have tried, I have actually been able to return to T-Tapp after a break and enjoyed doing it again! Also, returning to it after even a month's break did not kill me!  Somehow I do not lose all muscle tone gained even when taking a break!

It was just over a year ago that I discovered Trim Healthy Mama.  I have eaten according to this plan off and on this year.  I was completely committed to this plan for 5 months last summer/fall, but the holidays and homeschooling and traveling for our adoption and finances kept me from doing it full time since November.  I have gone back and done it for a few weeks here and there, but something would come up and derail my best laid plans.  I truly love how I feel with I'm eating the THM way, but it takes planning and in many cases preparation, which can be difficult if not impossible with my busy lifestyle!  Plus, I just seem to easily return to my eating for the wrong reasons.

Between August of 2012 and October of 2013 I lost a total of 50 pounds.  As of Monday, I had gained back 7 of those pounds.  Not bad!  But I have more to lose.  I'm not sure how many pounds I need to lose (somewhere around 40 - 70 pounds - 70 pounds would be the weight I was at my wedding but I was not exercising at the time) in order to achieve my goal (to be able to wear my wedding dress!!), but the pounds don't really matter, I just want to be at a healthy weight and no saddle bags!

Food has always been something I turn to for just about anything.  If I'm super happy or want to celebrate something, it's time for a treat, if I'm depressed I turn to sugar loaded treats, especially chocolate, I looked forward to the food at events almost as much as I looked forward to the events....you get the idea.  Definitely a problem for me.  I do have to say that I have rarely gained weight when I was not pregnant, and I would often lose weight between pregnancies, but being pregnant about every 2 years for 25 years makes one not exactly motivated to try to lose weight....only to get pregnant and gain it (and maybe more) back!  And nursing didn't help me in the least - I never lost weight from nursing alone!

This past month Chessa Honey shared a book, Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food, that was a huge part of her weight loss journey (she has love 85 pounds over the past 2 years through healthy eating and running).  I've seen lots of women lose weight, lots of weight, but usually I won't pay attention to how they did it unless I see that they've lost and kept it off for years.  So why would I look into what Chessa did to lose weight?  Especially since a huge part of her weight loss was through running, something I could not do even if I wanted to due to the type of knee injury I sustained 2 1/2 years ago (hole in the cartilage on the weight bearing surface of my femur)???  Well, it was what she said about no longer eating to fulfill her needs.  Turning her craving for food into a craving for God.  THAT got my attention.  I immediately ordered the book "Made to Crave" on Amazon!

So I am almost done with the book (I have one chapter left), and this past Monday I began a journey that I am hoping will be for the rest of my life.  That of eating healthy for the sake of being healthy and going to God to fulfill my needs.  This will be hard, very hard.  Changing habits and seemingly natural reflexes will be something that I could not possibly do on my own.  I don't like change.  I don't like "hard,"  But sometimes I am up for "hard" if the carrot at the proverbial end of the stick is good enough.  Growing closer to God and stronger in my faith is something I always desire.  That is the carrot that works for me.  While weight loss is something I greatly desire, it is not enough to keep me from eating that dessert when it's calling my name.  Instant gratification wins out every time for me over long term goals.  I'm weak that way.

Here are some of the things I'm committed to thinking when I am tempted to eat things that are not good for me:
"God has given me power over my food choices
"I was made for more than being stuck in a vicious cycle of defeat)
"How will I feel about this choice tomorrow morning?"
"Is this within the parameters of my FREEDOM?"

(These are taken from Made to Crave , some of them direct quotes, some of them my paraphrase)

So what, exactly will this eating healthy look like?  For me this means avoiding refined carbs (sugar, while flour, white rice, potatoes etc), leaning on the fatter side of life (heavy whipping cream, cheeses, nuts, butter, coconut oil) and balances complex carbs/protein.  It's a lot like Trim Healthy Mama, but I am also going to be eating some fruits too, and not freaking out about "S" meals and "E" meals...just eating fruit now and then as treats and trying to always have protein whenever I eat.

As far as exercising goes, I am working on learning the Total Workout from T-Tapp.  The Basic Workout that I've been doing since last November is the first 15 minutes of the 40 minute Total Workout.  So I'm planning to to The Basic Workout every other day, and on the other days do what I can out of the Total Work out, working up to learning it all.  I do plan to take weekends off though!

So, two days into this journey I am looking for accountability.  This is going to be hard.  This will take a mental shift and knowing that I will have to answer to someone will be very helpful, especially in these early months when change is so hard and new habits have not gotten embedded in my brain!  So I am going to, as much as it is possible, to post here on my blog once a week how it's going to me.  I'm going to answer the following questions (these are from Made to Crave ):

Did I overeat this week on any given day?
Did I move more and exercise regularly?
Do I feel lighter than I did at this time last week?
Did I eat in secret or out of anger/frustration/happiness?
Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food instead of to God?
Before I hopped on the scale, did I think I'd had a successful, God pleasing week?

Here are my answers for this week (well, the past two days):
No
Yes (Basic Workout on Mon and today, 15 minutes of Total Workout on Tuesday)
Yes (lost 1 1/2 pounds of water weight and my ankles prove that!)
No
No (but I wasn't very good at turning to Him to deal with temptation yet either)
Yes

I am looking for a partner in my journey.  Someone to pray for me, and I pray for them, and to hold me accountable to these questions.  Are you that someone?  If you think you might want to partner with me, please email me and we'll see if it can work for both of us!  I'm thinking a few emails/week or maybe even just one a week....

I love tickers - do you?  I'm going to set my first goal at losing 54 more pounds from where I am now.  That would make a total weight loss of  97 pounds (that sounds insane!).  This should get me into my wedding dress, if not really close!

Trim Healthy Tapping Mama update!

My posts on Trim Healthy Mama (THM) and T-Tapp are getting a lot more attention/hits than my average posts about our family, so I thought I'd give you all a little update on how I'm doing.

In preparation for our son's wedding and for our trip to Eastern Europe I was trying to be as consistent as I could possibly be and it paid off!

At the end of September, I had officially lost a total of 90 1/4 inches since starting T-Tapp (13 months total).   I was too busy to measure after that.  I stayed on plan for eating right up until the day before Jeremy's wedding.  After that point I went to eating as healthy as I could under the circumstances, with a few treats here and there.  This meant I made far better choices while we were traveling than I usually do!

The result of healthier choices was that for the first time ever I experienced no digestive trouble while traveling, with the exception of the very last flight (ate french fries forgetting in my tired state that I do not tolerate french fried unless they are not fried in vegetable oil...Five Guys Burgers and Fries, for example, deep fry their french fries in peanut oil).

I also did not do T-Tapp after the wedding.  I did, however do the primary back stretch the morning after we arrived in Christy's country as the long flights had really done a number on my circulation, my back and a few other places.  It really helped me to feel like I could move again.  I had planned on  doing this more, but it just plain slipped my mind.

I really expected that traveling would mean that my neck/back would get messed up, as that always happens when I sleep anywhere besides my own bed.  Due to the strengthening of my spine, I was able to sleep in many different beds, and even in an airplane, and I never had back or neck problems!  I've had some issues with some tightness in my right hip in just the last week, but I'm doing some stretches and have high hopes that doing T-Tapp again will resolve this!

So, last week Daryl and I had to go in for updated medicals.  We found that I have lost 21 pounds since last June!  That means I've lost nearly 50 pounds since I started T-Tapping, and 21 pounds since I started THM, and that after being off the plan for 6 weeks!!  AWESOME!  And, I measured this morning and I had a net gain of 3/8 inch in the last 6 weeks.

I.was.shocked.

Normally, in the so many times that I have done diet and/or exercise plans, I'd bounce back once I went off them.  I'd gain back some, if not all, the pounds I had worked to hard to lose.  Not this time, baby!  I ate healthier as I have come to appreciate the benefits of eating good foods.  But I did have some decadent deserts and even some chocolate bars and other naughty foods!  I was active, but not doing any "workout" and I maintained for 6 weeks!  Unheard of!

So now I have recovered from the trip and am ready to get back into the program.  Last week I ate on plan for most of the week, but had a few too many treats over the weekend so I'm more than ready to start eating the THM way again.

Since it had been a whole 6 weeks since I had done the Basic Workout Plus, and since I had found all my T-Tapp DVDs (some had gone missing), I decided it was time for a new workout.  Today I did the instructional for Healthy Hormones, Menopause Management.  I wasn't able to do the entire workout due to time constraints (it was much longer than I had planned for), but I only missed out on the T-Tapp Twist and Hoe Downs.  I'll do the entire workout on Wednesday.  It felt wonderful!  And, as usual, I could tell that I was losing fluids due to the wonderful effects of T-Tapping.  It really works the body in such a way that it sheds any fluid retention!

Yesterday, I even had someone ask me if I had lost a lot of weight!  I saw her last at the end of the summer. Man, did that ever make my day!

And you know, eating the THM way is so not depriving....I had a chocolate muffin (Muffin In A Mug) for breakfast with a tall coffee with heavy whipping cream and Truvia.  Both were delicious, satisfying, healthy and kept me from getting hungry for over 3 hours!  I'm not supposed to go so long between meals, but I was gone all morning and did not plan for my snack!  Oops!

I am (Almost) a Trim Healthy Mama!

I say "almost" because I am not a Trim Healthy Mama "yet".  I am trimmer, but not yet trim.  But, I AM healthy!  And I am most certainly a Mama - in fact, I think it would be said that I am a Mega Mom! I think having 12 children would qualify me for "Mega Mom" status, wouldn't you?  But, I do not want to ever be a "Mega Sized Mama" ever again!

As you read in my last post, I started a journey to regain my health over a year ago, beginning with T-Tapp.  That was an awesome basis for my return to health.  When I started T-Tapp, I had just began to be able to go around without crutches for the first time in over 4 months.  I was out of shape and over weight.  I did some experimenting with my diet through last fall.  I went sugar free for a few weeks.  I tried a little of this and a little of that to just be eating healthier overall.  I switched over to only using good fats - olive oil, coconut oil (instead of shortening) and butter.

We had the opportunity to watch a couple of inspiring DVDs - Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, and Food Inc.  I found that something that I had begun to suffer from over the summer was, in fact, "Urticaria".  Joe, of the Fat Sick and Nearly Dead DVD had suffered from this.  My doctor had told me that my immune system was out of whack and was thinking that any irritation to my skin was a cause for an all out battle, so even something as minor as a mosquito bite because eczema very quickly - painful and itchy and would not go away.  I began to be serious about trying to eat right and get healthier.  I did some juicing - that DVD was so inspiring I just had to try it.  I couldn't do a full on juice fast since I was still nursing Carese, but I did have a fresh veggie/fruit juice for breakfast everyday for about a month. Within a few weeks of eating right, cutting our sugar and refined flour, and doing some juicing, my urticaria began to heal and disappear!

So, fast forward to this past spring.  I was so excited that I had consistently lose inches from T-Tapp and I felt overall healthy, and I had so many projects around our home that needed attention. So I made this huge summer "To Do" list and dug in with a vengeance.  The only problem was, that after just a few days of painting and cleaning projects I bottomed out.  I just couldn't do it.  I was tired, yet I wasn't sleeping well at night.  My left eye was constantly twitching.  I had mood swings and was definitely dealing with some hormonal issues.  I did some research, as well as began to feel that many of the things I was dealing with were similar to what I dealt with over 10 years ago when I experience adrenal fatigue.  I decided that what I needed was a real juice fast.  I started a 15 day boot camp which was 5 days of eating all fruits and veggies, cooked, raw, juiced and blended, followed by 5 days of just juicing.  I actually did 8 days of juicing and then I hit the wall.  I just couldn't go on.  I told Daryl that I HAD to quit - it was doing great things for my health (my eye had stopped twitching and my energy had returned), but I could tell my metabolism was shutting down - I was cold all the time and super cranky!  Juice fasting and motherhood just are not great companions, and that is a fact.

That very day, I got an email showing a blog post about a book about eating healthy that was written by two "mothers of many,"  Trim Healthy Mama.  It was perfect timing.  Everything that this blog post said about this book made sense and I knew that this would be the next step in my journey to health.  I did some research into the book and the program and found the Trim Healthy Mama Facebook page for women using the program (over 8,000 members at the time) and talked it over with Daryl.  I ordered the book (there was a wait time) and adjusted my diet according to the basic principles of the book (yeah, I'll get to that in a minute).  I also borrowed the book from a friend and began reading like there was no tomorrow!  I finished the first 10 chapters or so in just a couple of days, and then researched what supplies I needed to have on hand for most of the recipes that I thought I would like.  I talked about the eating plan with my husband and older girls, and was able to get them to agree to try this with me for the 4 weeks left until our church camp out.

Fast forward a few weeks.  we were challenged at first to work out what recipes we liked, as well as how to tweak recipes that we already have, and find something easy and enjoyable for us.  Some of us were more challenged as they were dealing with sugar withdrawals (I was just coming off a juice fast and had been sugar free for a while), so that made it hard the first week.  But we all stuck with it and worked to find what would work for us.  Here are some of the benefits we discovered in that first 4 weeks:

No intestinal distress - no gas, no indigestion, no burping!
Acne/pimples were nearly gone - great reduction in blemishes for all of us
Noticeable inch loss, and for those of us who were weighing, there was significant pounds lost too!
Cravings greatly reduced - sugar was not our only addiction we quickly found out, but after a couple of weeks, all cravings were basically gone (well, if someone ate something in front of us, it might be a difficult temptation, but we were no longer craving foods/snacks.treats out of the blue)
Better Sleep!  At least for Daryl and I
Dessert every night - this made everything worth it!

So, as we approached the camp out, I asked if they were going to return to the plan after camp.  Daryl was so enthusiastic about this way of eating that he didn't even want to eat our old way even at camp - we both ended up caving here and there, but mostly stuck to plan at camp!  The older girls were mixed on going back on plan, but Jessica decided to go back on plan in order to be as healthy as possible in preparing to be standing up in Jeremy's wedding (she really enjoyed/is enjoying the lack of blemishes when she is "on plan").

So, here we are, 2 months since we started the "Trim Healthy Mama" way of life.  Unlike any other diet I have ever been on (and there have been many), this is becoming our new "normal."  We are loving how we feel, and loving the lost inches.  Daryl has very little left to loose and is now experimenting with meals that are meant for weight maintenance.  I had a very busy two weeks in August, and although I had not cheated during those two weeks, I felt that I probably had not lost much, as I was just eating what was our new normal, and no longer having to focus on what I was eating.  To my surprise, I had a record inch loss - over 8 inches lost in 2 weeks!  I was doing T-Tapp regularly, but I was still having THM desserts every night!  I believe I can safely say that this is now a way of eating that I will be sticking to for the rest of my life.  I never want to go back to eating foods that may taste good at the time that they enter my mouth, but leave a legacy of indigestion, gas, lethargy, acne and weight gain.  We are eating tasty meals, delicious snacks and desserts.  For many of our meals, you'd be hard pressed to even tell what we did differently - it looks the same, just made differently.  We have homemade pizza every week, lasagna monthly, spaghetti and burgers every week.  We have scrambled eggs and bacon or muffins for breakfast every day.  I have delicious protein smoothies every afternoon.  I do "cheat" once in a while, but it's usually things like popcorn, or thin whole wheat burger buns - still healthy foods, just a little too heavy in the carbs - but it's working - I'm still losing inches and feeling wonderful!  A few things I've cheated on and regretted though - Little Caesar's Pizza or a Dairy Queen Blizzard for example, were very hard on my system - indigestion, gas, pain were my punishments.

So what is the basics of this way of eating?  In a nutshell, you will learn when reading Trim Healthy Mama, that eating two sources of fuel in a meal will cause you to burn one and store the other.  Fuel sources for our bodies are fats and carbohydrates.  So a doughnut is the ultimate evil in this plan.  So it having a burger on a big old bun, and adding some french fries or potato chips.  So we choose to have our hamburger on a low carb bun or tortilla shell, and then have a salad or veggies with dip on the side.  By limiting your fuel source to one fuel, your body will easily burn that fuel source and will not pack anything into fat on your body.  So there is two types of meals in this plan - the "fat" based meal that is rich in good fats and low in carbs, and the "carb" based meals that are higher in carbs and low in fats. Instead of sugar, you used forms of stevia, and instead of wheat flours in most recipes you use things like almond meal and flax meal.

It is so good for you, and after you get adjusted to this way of eating (probably at least 2 weeks for most people to get the hang of it), it is quite easy.  It does require purchasing ingredients that most people do not regularly purchase, and some of these things can be a little pricey.  But once we were on the plan for a little while, the extra costs have lessened (we had to purchase a lot of new things all at once to start off, but now we just replace them as we use them up, so it's not all at once).

I highly recommend getting this book for another reason besides learning to be healthy - the first 12 chapters are chocked full of great information about how our bodies process foods, and what nutrition is and all sorts of great information about health.  I'm going to be requiring my children to read these chapters this year as part of their science curriculum!

As a side note, it's a fun book to read.  It's written by two very different sisters, and they can be so funny as they banter back and forth in the book and even in the recipes!  One sister has 9 children and the other has 6 children.  The mamas were both home-schooled growing up and home-school their children.  One is a super healthy purist (i.e. no microwaves) and the other is on the more practical side (i.e. if it takes too much time, it's not going to work for me).  It's a great balance that ensures that most moms will be able to relate to one or the other!  They even have easy vs purist version of many of the recipes!

I think one of the best things about this way of eating is that both of these mamas got to the point of no longer needing to lose weight.  They found that they had to make adjustments to the plan in order to maintain a healthy weight!  They created meals that will tweak the weight lost meals so that they are maintenance meals.  So you don't end up at your goal weight and then left all alone, trying to figure out how to keep what you've worked to hard to achieve!  Also, this way of eating can also be used when pregnant or nursing, you just need to have more of the meals that are weight maintaining in order to support the extra demand on your body!  I sure wish I had known about this years ago, but it wasn't known then so I'm just thankful that I have found it now!  And these are proof that is works - they've both been following this way of eating for years and years and they both look so healthy and trim!

A little warning to those interested in trying out this way of eating.  The book seems pricey, but there are hundreds of easy to follow recipes - it's almost more of a recipe book than anything else!  But it's so important to read the actual book and understand the how and why of this way of eating and why it works so well.

And a little tip - there are tons of recipes to be found on blogs, Pinterest, the Facebook Page, and the Trim Healthy Mama forums.  And there's lots of help to be found too - can't figure something out?  Go to the Facebook Page of the Forums and ask and you'll get lots of help!

And lastly - I know you're thinking "I just can't live without chocolate" - well, let me tell you, these ladies LOVE chocolate and so do lots of other mamas on this plan, so there's tons and tons or great chocolate recipes!

So what are you waiting for?  Go buy Trim Healthy Mama and start your journey to good health and a trim figure today!

I'm A T-Tapp Success!

No, I am not at my goal weight.  No I am not "done."  Yes, I have made amazing progress.  Yes, I still have a long way to go.

Over a month ago I was contacted by the staff at T-Tapp.com and was asked to write a T-Tapp Success Story!  They had noticed that my posting about the success I have experienced doing T-Tapp  was very encouraging to other women on the T-Tapp Forums!

After getting encouragement from several friends and online friends I decided to take them up on their offer and I wrote the following as my T-Tapp testimony.  It will be live on their site, I am told, on Tuesday, August 12!

Here's what I wrote for that story:

Before I began T-tapp in June 2012, then 11 months of doing T-Tapp!
First I need to give you some background for you to see how significant this “Success Story” is in my life. As a child and teenager I was very aware that I was not skinny like all the models and popular kids in school. I started my first diet in junior high. Through high school I tried every fad diet that came along (that I could afford), and even tried diet pills and ended up anorexic during my senior year, getting to my lowest adult weight of 135 (I am 5 ft 10 in and have a large bone structure). After recovering from that I swore off dieting. I went to college the next fall and during my freshman year I gained weight like never before. I ended up weighing 185 when I went home for summer break. That summer I succumbed to my anorexia again, but this time I was an exercising maniac. I did alternated aerobics and weight lifting while eating next to nothing. By the end of the summer I was down to 150. I kept on my regime, eating one small meal a day (if at all), living on diet pills and diet pop. I even became an aerobics instructor that year. This continue until the next fall. Then I became engaged to my best friend, swore off dieting, and promptly put on 20 pounds when I went on birth control pills to prepare for being married.

Fast forward 15 years. I had not dieted in the least, and had gone through 8 pregnancies. I had lost the baby weight after my first baby, but never again. I was usually around 220 - 240 between pregnancies. Then I found the Atkins Diet. Long story short, but I lost weight and got down to 190, but it wreaked havoc on my health. After another pregnancy, the loss of a dearly beloved niece, and a miscarriage I suffered from severe adrenal fatigue (diagnosed by a naturopathic doctor). I began to take my health seriously. I ate right and took supplements and was able to recover and went on to have more babies. I then seemed to be around 240 – 250 between pregnancies. After my 10th baby I even did Curves for over a year and got fit and lost a few pounds, but had to step down after I got pregnant with my 10th baby.

Fast forward again. I didn't diet again until I found myself pushing 280 pounds after spending months in the hospital with our 11th child, Esther, who has Down Syndrome and was born with a heart defect, which required open heart surgery when she was just 3 months old. All the hospital food and sitting around really did a number on my weight, and being 45 didn't help either. I also, for the first time, hod my blood pressure elevated high enough to require that I go on high blood pressure medication. So when Esther was 1 ½ years old we were introduced to the Body For Life regime and both my husband and I tried that. I was able to regain my health and strength over a period of 3 months and drop about 30 pounds, but then it stalled. The program was just not doable in the long run when I had a large family to care for. 30 – 45 minutes every day and eating separate meals just didn't work. I was able to maintain the weight loss, but even thought I tried several times, I just could not stay with the regimen. One benefit from losing the extra pounds was I was able to go off of high blood pressure med, but my BP was still hovering in the upper ranges of normal. Good but not great.

Two years after starting BFL I was still at 250 and I got pregnant at 47 years of age. We were surprised to say the least. Due to some pregnancy complications (mostly due to my age) I was on bed rest starting at 30 weeks, put on high blood pressure medication again, and ended up having Carese 3 weeks early via emergency C-Section due to cord compression. She was so tiny but so healthy. I was thrilled to be able to go home with my baby so quickly. I was looking forward to gaining the strength that I had lost during all the bed rest! Only problem was, I injured my knee when she was 6 weeks old, and it turned out to be a major knee injury requiring me to be on crutches off and on for the next 4 months. Needless to say I got weaker and gained more weight, topping out at an all time high non-pregnancy weight of 285. My blood pressure also remained high, requiring me to stay on medication.

Just after I was off crutches I heard about T-Tapp! I was sent a link to Charlotte Siems website (http://charlottesiems.com/ ). I was amazed that a fellow mom of 12 could lose all the weight and keep it off for years. I knew that if she could do it, so could I! I ordered the MORE 2 and did my measuring and started my 14 day boot-camp the middle of August 2012. I still had pain in my knee quit often and iced it every night. I also got involved in the T-Tapp Forums and found a great resource for encouragement and advice! After just a few weeks of T-Tapp I was pain free and going quickly up and down the stairs and I was able to discontinue using blood pressure medication with the approval of my doctor. It was amazing! I was losing about 4 inches per week for the first month or so. I was consistently doing my workouts three times a week. By the beginning of December I had moved on to MORE 2 and I had lost over 40 inches! I was struggling with some shoulder and back issues by then (due to nursing my baby in bed at “my old age”, so as I turned 49 I found my self very limited in what I could do in my workouts. I continued to do what I could and turned to the T-Tapp forums for help too. I learned about Magnesium and finally gave it a try. After over a month of back spasms, they went away the first time I sprayed Magnesium oil on my lower back! They did come back, but each time I used the MO and used ice and they went away again. I started a nightly routine of spraying MO and after a few weeks they were gone. My shoulder continued to give me trouble, but that was easier to work around than back spasms!

Through the rest of that winter and spring I sporadically did MORE 2 and tried to eat relatively healthy foods and even did a few bouts of being sugar/white flour free. My inch loss slowed to about 4 inches a month. I was very busy processing our newest journey, that of international adoption. After a wild month of fund raising in April I decided to take May off – no workouts, eating whatever. That was the first month since starting T-Tapp that I actually gained inches – a whopping 16 inches in just 4 weeks! Not good!

Once our paperwork was submitted for our adoption and we began the wait, I realized that I really needed to get ready for two trips abroad! But I had pushed myself too hard for too long. I was still nursing a toddler “at my age” and not getting enough sleep most nights. I just couldn't get myself moving, yet I pushed myself to get some projects done anyway. Very quickly I found my self showing signs of adrenal fatigue again. So I did a short round of juicing, resting and taking supplements recommended for adrenal fatigue. When I hit day 8 of the juice fast I simultaneously “hit the wall” and could not go on and heard about an awesome new book about eating healthy for moms! I worked my way off of the juice fast and started doing my MORE 2 workouts while I waited for the book. I started the “Trim Healthy Mama” way of eating three weeks ago and it's amazing – even makes use of some of the amazing things that I learned about from the T-Tapp Forums!). It's healthy and balanced, and I'm eating a wide variety of foods and does not seem like a diet at all. This is very doable for the long run as I'm eating nearly all the foods that I like to eat, with just a few tweaks and being careful about which foods I eat together! I was sure I would gain back inches eating this way, but I didn't, I continued to lose inches! I also started a 28 day T-Tapp challenge so I was doing my T-Tapp faithfully again for the first time in months (I still have a little shoulder pain, but I am finally able to do all the movements again!). From the beginning of June until now I have lost 31 inches (including re-losing those 16 inches that I gained in May), for a total overall inch loss of over 70 inches in 11 months. I was finally able to use a friend's scale and found that I have lost about 30 pounds since I began this T-Tapp journey.

Best of all I'm starting to have some energy again. Also my blood pressure is now averaging the BP of a teenager! It's the lowest it's been in over 10 years! I still have days where I struggle, but I've had some wonderful days of tackling long ignored projects too! I know I have not even made it close to my “goal weight” but I really have no idea what that weight will be. I have about 70 pounds to lose to get to the weight I was when I got married, but with my T-Tapp “long, lean muscle fibers” I might still fit into my wedding dress but weigh more and be in better shape! My daughter is very similar to my build at her age, so if I go by her measurements I have about 45 inches to lose – now that sounds very encouraging and do-able to me!

So, you may ask, “What is so successful about your story?” No, I'm not at my goal “measurements” and no where near my old idea of “ideal weight”, but I have made great strides in the past 11 months. With the exception of one month, I have consistently lost inches, even when I was rarely doing my T-Tapp. I'd go for weeks without doing a workout and yet find I had lost little if any strength or endurance! But when I am consistent with my workouts, I do lose the inches faster. I have succeeded at losing 2/3s of my extra inches in less than a year. That is success. That is inspiring. I'm inspired to keep on keeping on – for the rest of my life. My goal is to be able to do the 15 minute workout someday. 15 minutes, three times a week for life sounds wonderful. So does finding a new “goal measurement”. So if you take anything away from my story, remember to “do what you can,” take your measurements, and throw out that scale!

That's it, that's my story up to last month.  As of this week I've been doing T-Tapp for an entire year.  I've never done any exercise program for that long!  And I'm back at it even after our family vacation!  In fact, I'm going to try doing the Basic Workout every day and see how that goes!  Also, I am now doing the BWO+ that I had mentioned in my testimonial as something I hoped to do someday!  I've been doing that workout for almost a month now!  Hurray!  I'm due to measure, as I try to measure 1 - 2 times a month, but my measuring tape is missing!
